Organizations lament about being blindsided by their competitors and “beat themselves up” about missing the next great opportunity. Meanwhile, organizational gurus write articles and books about how corporations should emulate start-up’s with their seemingly “magical” abilities to address market needs at just the right moment. Interestingly, no “gurus” write about the 1,000’s of failed start-up’s as they try and address the same market needs. Once an organization has a certain level of scale, duplicating the operations of a “single visionary leader” start-up could be disastrous for the company.
