To be successful, wellness programs must not only inform participants about health risks, but motivate them to make a positive change. Medtronic, with more than 38,000 employees worldwide, focuses its extensive wellness offerings on encouraging and supporting long-term, healthy lifestyle changes.
The results have been impressive: 58% of participants have eliminated or reduced at least one health risk, the company saw a 72% reduction in at-risk cholesterol from 2007-2009, and weight-loss program participants lost a total of 12,700 pounds. These changes have also resulted in approximately $4 million annual savings and a 2:1 return on investment.
