I just watched the video "e;Never, Ever, Ever Hire Grade B or C People in Your Management Team"e; and felt that I needed to put in this possibly heretical comment: I think what the speaker is saying is a potentially dangerous mindset when you consider the following: * During the height of the 90's financial bubble, Grade A people were probably those that wanted to take even more risks and those that preach caution about the reality of the bubble situation were probably the Grade B & C people. * Cults usually have very happy excited Grade A members that see things the way the cult leader does (and that enriches the cult leader by constantly overachieving for the cult). * The work of people like Ericsson (Making of an Expert), Colvin (Talent is Overrated), Stewart (Management Myth), Pfeffer & Stutton (Hard Facts, Dangerous half-truths...), Collins (How the Mighty Fall) have argued and shown evidence against the myth of the magical Grade A star performer. * What does having all Grade A players, as perceived through the eyes of the hiring manager mean for diversity? At the end of the day, be careful about being Fooled by Randomness (Taleb). Sorry about the rant but the video did disturbed me...
