I work for a small, private company. Things on the HR homefront are usually pretty good, but occasionally my boss (also the owner) throws the staff a curveball that we all have to deal with. My question is two-part. The larger issue is A) how do you deal with a small business that does not have an HR representative? Who do you approach with HR related issues? B) Recently, the boss mandated that everyone on the staff is "e;required"e; to attend an out-of-state retreat. Even when we ask him, he refuses to tell any of us what is happening at this retreat (when it starts, when it ends, agenda, and even whether it's business or pleasure). Can an employer require his staffers to attend an out-of-state retreat where we've been given zero details about what it's for?
