Waiting Period - STD, paid or unpaid? I've been asked to find out how common it is to have a waiting period before an employee becomes eligible for STD benefits. I'm finding that it's not as common as I had thought. My company has a waiting period that is unpaid, but allows employees to use vacation/sick days to cover the period. If the employee ends up qualifying for STD, the company gives the vacation/sick days back to the employee for future use. In effect, it is the same as having no waiting period. I'm interested in hearing from others if having a waiting period is considered customary or not...and whether giving the time back makes sense. Thanks...
